Equity is your share of the pot if the hand were run to showdown right now, averaged over every possible runout, weighted by your opponent's range. Pot odds translate a bet you're facing into the equity you'd need to call profitably: if you have to call c to win a pot of p (before your call), the breakeven equity is c / (p + c). Above that number, calling is profitable on average; below it, calling loses money even if you sometimes win the hand.

The two concepts have to be compared, not used in isolation. A hand with 40% equity sounds weak, but if you're only required to have 25% equity to call profitably (because the pot is laying you 3:1), it's an easy call. The same 40%-equity hand is a fold against a bet that requires 55% equity to continue.

This app never hardcodes an equity number. Every percentage — Trainer grading, Play-mode hand review, the widget below — comes from running the matchup: exact enumeration of every board runout, or a seeded Monte-Carlo sample when that's too slow (full preflop equity spans 1,712,304 boards). The widget uses the same equityVsRangeAsync the Play-mode bots use, run in a background Worker so the UI stays responsive.
